Workshop III: Trade and Institutions It is well established that good institutions (quality of contract
enforcement, property rights, investor protection and the like) are
important for economic growth. What impact does globalization have on
economic institutions? We review existing theories, as well as econometric
and historical evidence on the impact of international trade on
institutions. The picture that emerges is nuanced. While in most cases
greater trade openness can stimulate the development of better economic
institutions, in other cases it may instead lead to increased expropriation,
more social conflict, and lower financial development. The ultimate impact
of trade on institutional development depends on the initial conditions and
the country's underlying comparative advantage.
