Biography

Dr. Gang Peng

HKS Asia Fellow, Renmin University of China

Gang Peng is the Economic Professor and the Director of the Economic Research Centre for Developing Countries of Renmin University of China. Mr. Pang’s major research areas are development economics and international economics. He dedicates himself to explore the Chinese economic development theory based on comparative studies of the experiences of other developing countries. Mr. Peng is a leading scholar in studying poverty amid affluence, particularly its interlinks with globalization. Mr. Peng has broad experiences in international academic exchange. Since 1992, he has conducted research and teaching activities in Europe, the U.S. and Japan with sponsorship from the Ford Foundation, the European Commission and the WTO among others. A native of Beijing, Mr. Peng was born in 1955. He is married with one daughter.

 

Dr. Weiping Huang

Renmin University of China

Weiping Huang is the Economic Professor of Renmin University of China. He was former Dean of the School of Economics, Renmin University during 1993-2002. Currently he is the Executive Director of the Committee on Economics Education and Exchange with the U.S., member of Academic Committee of Renmin University, and of the China Academic of Social Science. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar doing research at Stanford University from 1993-1994, as visiting professor of Dickinson College, U.S. in 1995, and Fedrico II, Italy. His research interest include regional economic integration in EU and APEC, international trade policies, and China’s openness to the outside world. A native of Beijing, Mr. Huang was born in 1951. He is married with one son.

 

Dr. Xueling Guan

Renmin University of China

Xueling Guan is the Economic Professor and the Director of the Russian Research Center of Renmin University of China. She is holding concurrent posts including the guest senior researcher of Europe and Asia Social Development Research Institute under the State Council Development Research Center, standing director of Sino-Russian Eastern Europe and Central Asia Academy, and standing director of Sino-Russian Eastern Europe and Central Asia Economic Research Institute etc. Her major education and research fields include the basic theory of world economy, international economy relationship, economic integration in Europe, and economic operation of transition countries. Her major international activities for academic exchange include: Have gone abroad many countries and regions, such as Russia, Czech, Poland, Hong Kong and Taiwan etc. A native of Beijing, Ms. Guan was born in 1962. She is married with one son.

Dr. Huanzhen Luo

HKS Asia Fellow, Tokyo Keizai University

Huanzhen Luo is Associate Professor of Economics at Tokyo Keizai University. He will be researching the respective roles of the state and the market and their interactions in economic development in light of China’s experience. He is also an associate professor at the Department of Economics of Tokyo Kenzai University (TKU) in Tokyo, Japan. He is head of the secretariat for the Japanese Research Association of Chinese Economy. Professor Luo has written several books including: Economic Development of China (2005, co-author). His current research focuses on poverty reduction, education and economic development  in rural China. He earned his master’s degree in economics from, and completed his Ph.D study at Hitotsubashi University, earned his Ph.D and master’s degrees in economics from Renmin University of China, and his bachelor’s degree in economics from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. 

 

Dr. Yuwen Zhang

HKS Asia Fellow, Renmin University of China

Yuwen Zhang is the Associate Professor of Renmin University of China. Mr. Zhang earned his master’s degree in economics from Anhui University in eastern China and PhD degree in economics from Renmin University of China. After graduation, he entered into China Academy of Social Science (CASS) and worked in the Institute of Industrial Economy, then moved to School of Public Administration, Renmin University. His main interest fields include public finance and corporate finance, the transitional structure of regulation on public finance in China, and the financing of public health. During his stay at Harvard, Mr. Zhang will be working on the mechanism of US local public debts and its implications for China, as well as the financing of public health and its implications for China.
