Panel 1: Public Private Partnerships and Development: Hype or Helpful
Biography Kristi Ragan
Adjunct Professor, Georgetown University Kristi Ragan is an expert in public-private partnerships for improving social and economic conditions in developing countries. She leads this work for DAI, a global consulting firm based in Bethesda, Maryland. She is DAI's Strategic Advisor to USAID on Global Development Alliances where she develops innovative alliances and trains USAID country teams on how to build sustainable partnerships. She has been an Adjunct Faculty at Georgetown University for the last four years teaching a graduate course in public-private partnerships. During her 25 years in international development, much of that with the United Nations Development Programme, she has lived and worked in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific. Ms. Ragan co-chairs the Work Group on Corporate Responsibility for the Society for International Development in Washington D.C. where she explores the drivers for multinational corporations engaging donors on development challenges. She served as Peace Corps Country Director in Côte d'Ivoire and also as a Peace Corps Volunteer in both Tanzania and Fiji.
John Lunde
Director of International Networks, Mars Inc. John Lunde has worked for 24 years in management positions across Mars Incorporated with roles and responsibilities spanning Research & Development, Quality Assurance, Food Safety Management, Sustainability and Global Scientific Affairs. Mr Lunde is considered a pioneer in the field of public-private partnerships, having led Mars' initial efforts for socio-economic and environmental cocoa sustainability in the early 1990s. Since this time, he has built robust platforms of support for the sector among donors, non-profits and industry leaders spanning Africa, Asia and Latin America. In his current capacity, Mr. Lunde is responsible for replicating his success in partnership building across brands to now benefit the pet food side of the Mars business. Mr. Lunde holds his Masters Degree in Industrial Chemistry and began his career in Research & Development with positions at Union Carbide and PepsiCo.
Marie David
Director, Social Responsibility, Global Procurement, Wal-Mart Marie joined Wal-Mart in 2003 and served as a project specialist in the Global Supply Chain Management within the Logistics division of Wal-Mart Stores, subsequently moving to Global Procurement where she currently serves as Director of Social Responsibility. Prior to joining Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Marie spent 7 years as a consultant to major companies like General Electric, BellSouth Cellular and delivered solutions to companies like Citibank, WorldCom and Verizon Long Distance in the Information Technology arena. Before venturing into consulting, Marie practiced as an attorney in the areas of corporate and commercial law as well as international law. She holds a Barrister at Law degree from the Nigerian Law School and is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Drew Luten
Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Management, USAID Since September 2007, Drew Luten has served as the Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Management at the United States Agency for International Development. Previously, he has served as the Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for Europe & Eurasia as well as in numerous roles in the Office of the General Counsel of USAID. Mr. Luten participated in establishing the Millennium Challenge Account, serving as Deputy General Counsel during the start-up of the Millennium Challenge Corporation. He also helped establish USAID's Global Development Alliance, which seeks innovative ways to promote and support public-private partnerships for international development programs. Prior to joining USAID, Mr. Luten was a business and financial attorney with an international law in St. Louis, MO and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and William Jewell College.
Thomas G. Ehr
Executive Director, MTV Europe Foundation Thomas G. Ehr is the Executive Director of the MTV Europe Foundation, which he and senior MTV management conceived and launched in 2003. Based in London, the Foundation endeavors to educate young people on critical social issues and inspire them to action. Tom is the Executive Producer of MTV EXIT, MTV's campaign to End Exploitation and Trafficking. In partnership with USAID, MTV EXIT currently is educating millions of young Asians about trafficking and empowering them to keep control of their futures. Prior to joining MTV, Tom headed multimillion-dollar transition projects for the USAID in Serbia and Kazakhstan, under contract with Booz Allen Hamilton and IBM Business Consulting Services. He previously served as Senior Counsel at the U.S. Department of Commerce as well as President and Executive Director of War Child USA, an international children's assistance organization. He gained his law degree from the University of Georgia in 1988, and his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1984.
